CHAPTER FOURTEEN

As I lay in David's arms with my eyes half closed I contemplated what we had. As difficult as some things were, life was still pretty damn close to being perfect. I had the man of my dreams, and he loved me. Adored me even. It made me feel stronger. As though I could face whatever the world might throw at us. Not only that but I wasn't afraid anymore.

Part of me wondered if that was foolish. And maybe it was. With so much goodness in my life, it made me more vulnerable. I had a lot to lose if everything went wrong. And there were people out there who would love nothing more than to see me lose.

"I need to tell you something..." I rolled over and propped my still bound wrists up on David's chest.

He automatically began to untie me, his fingers gentle as he slipped the silk tie from my hands. A red line remained, branding my skin, much like he had branded me with the flogger and with his body. I didn't mind. He lifted my hands and pressed his lips against the red marks. A kiss so soft that if I hadn't been watching him do it I might have thought it was a feather's press.

"What is it?" His voice was soft, everything about him was no gentle. Gone was the savage dominant intent on opening me up to the world of pain and pleasure. Replaced by a man who only wanted to caress my skin, and place chaste kisses on my hands and lips.

"I went to the office to see your father..."

David froze, his grip momentarily tightening on my hands. "Why would you do that?" His voice was filled with tension.

"I wanted to see if I could fix things. You don't deserve what has happened. You built that company from the ground up. You deserve to keep it, it's yours."

David rolled away from me, sitting up on the edge of the bed. I followed him, my hands stroking down over his back. "I want you to be happy..."

He turned suddenly, the look in his eyes one of confusion. "What makes you think I'm not happy?"

"I can see it in your eyes... I don't want you to end up resenting me because of what I caused."

David turned his body to me, his hands cupping my face. "I could never resent you. I may have built the company from the ground up but it doesn't define who I am. And I think for a while it did. But this has shown me where my true path lies, and that is with you. I love you. You mean everything to me, and I would give up a hundred companies to keep you. There is a world of difference between what we share and what that company was... Part of me is glad it's gone..."

I sat up tugging the sheet after me. "I don't understand? How can you just walk away from something as important as that? The company was your identity.
